More confident? More courageous? Stronger? Excel harder?
The answer is complicated but the simple answer is NO. Not in the society set up with systems that don’t acknowledge women’s excellence. Not where if you’re too smart or too good looking you get penalized. Overlooked for promotions and salary increases.
It’s not an exaggeration to say women pay the brunt of society’s work and spite. How many women, myself included had to see a promotion or recognition or even simple respect go to a male colleague who may not have the same skill and knowledge level. Ask the women in your life if they’ve been unheard in their workplace? Or if they have to hide their discomfort behind a smile and a giggle to diffuse what feels like a ridiculous situation.
The reality is gender based violence and discrimination still happens, it’s systemic. It’s everywhere. Until we change the system we do need to have the courage and support circle to be able to rebuild the systems of our lives to a place where we’re all heard and safe.
This week, I’d like to hear from you. Let’s talk about what your experiences are (if you’re willing to share of course!). What have you seen in professional environments that caused the hair on your arm to stand up. Did you have great and terrible experiences? Ones that made you angry?
I’m happy to chime in with my story too, but sometimes we just need to listen and this week, I want to listen to you.
